How to heal toxic thoughts?

1. Identify and be honest with yourself about the source of harmful thoughts. Examine the circumstances leading up to the start of the thought, such as events, interactions with people, or even your daily routine. Often, difficult patterns of thinking can be linked to underlying causes.

2. Challenge the accuracy of your thoughts. Unhelpful thinking patterns often have little basis in reality and are usually exaggerated or distorted. In order to heal your thoughts, work on distinguishing the facts from the irrational or negative thinking.

3. Develop a counter thought or positive statement for each negative thought. Use positive self-talk to replace the negative thought pattern you want to heal. Start slowly and practice it over time to make it more natural and effortless.

4. Use relaxation and self-soothing techniques to cope with distress. Mindful breathing helps to break the cycle of worrying by giving your mind a chance to step away from the chaotic thought patterns that can occur. Meditation and affirmations can also work towards redirecting your thoughts and promoting a sense of wellbeing.

5. Try cognitive behavioral therapy. This type of talk therapy helps to challenge irrational and maladaptive thoughts, as well as explore and address underlying causes of these thought patterns. Working with a qualified professional can help you understand thought patterns and find healthier ways of thinking.
