Public storm warning signal #1

Public Storm Warning Signal #1 is issued by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) when a tropical cyclone is expected to affect a specific area within 36 hours. The signal is intended to alert residents to take precautionary measures and to listen for updates from the weather agency.

During Signal #1, residents in affected areas should expect winds of 30-60 kph and should take steps to secure loose objects and prepare for potential power outages. Public Storm Warning Signal #1 is the least severe of the warning signals, and generally indicates that a storm is still far from making landfall.

It is important to note that PAGASA issues different warning signals depending on the strength and proximity of the storm. It is recommended to pay attention to the official announcements and not to downplay the danger of any storm.

Here are some steps that you can take to prepare for a storm that is expected to affect your area:

  1. Stay informed: Monitor the local news and weather updates for the latest information on the storm's path and strength.
  2. Create an emergency plan: Make sure everyone in your household knows what to do in case of an emergency, including how to evacuate, where to go and how to contact each other.
  3. Prepare an emergency kit: This should include essentials such as food, water, first aid supplies, flashlights, and a battery-powered radio.
  4. Secure your home: Bring in outdoor furniture, trash cans, and other loose objects that could be picked up by strong winds.
  5. Have a backup power source: Make sure you have a supply of fresh batteries or a generator in case of power outages.
  6. Evacuate if necessary: If instructed to do so by authorities, leave the area immediately. Do not wait for the last minute, as it could be too late.
  7. Protect your vehicle: Park your car in a garage or covered area, if possible. If not, make sure it is far from trees or other objects that could fall on it.

It's important to remember that during a storm, you should stay away from windows, unplug appliances, and stay indoors if possible. If you must go outside, make sure to be aware of your surroundings and be prepared for sudden changes in the weather.
